The challenges of remote kindergarten teaching during the pandemic prompted me to leverage my musical background in addressing specific learning needs. Observing the limitations of existing educational music, particularly in teaching numeracy to multilingual learners, I developed a custom counting song.
The shift to online learning highlighted the need for engaging, effective teaching tools that could bridge the digital divide. Many existing resources fell short, particularly for students from diverse linguistic backgrounds. This realization sparked a creative journey into educational music composition.
My custom counting song was designed with several key features:
- Consistent Rhythmic Patterns: To reinforce number sequences, I created a rhythmic structure that mirrors the natural cadence of counting. This consistency helps children internalize the pattern of numbers.
- Synchronized Audio-Visual Elements: Ensuring number symbols appear simultaneously with their vocalization was crucial. This synchronization helps children connect the sound of the number with its visual representation, reinforcing both auditory and visual learning pathways.
- Repetitive Structure: The song uses repetition strategically to facilitate memory and pattern recognition. Each number is repeated in a predictable pattern, allowing children to anticipate and join in, boosting confidence and participation.
Despite initial reservations about sharing such a personal creation, the positive impact on my students’ learning—both in remote and subsequent in-person settings—has been remarkable. The song’s effectiveness transcended language barriers, improving counting skills across diverse linguistic backgrounds.
This experience has shown me the power of tailored, thoughtfully designed educational music. It’s inspired me to continue exploring ways to use music as a tool for learning, particularly in multilingual and diverse educational settings.
