A Serendipitous Discovery in Northern Italy
As our family embarked on our Italian journey, we found ourselves drawn to the northern shores of the iconic Lake Como. Little did we know that we were about to stumble upon a hidden gem that would capture our hearts – Cà Del Lago, a charming estate lovingly transformed into a family-friendly haven.
First Impressions: A Perfect Blend of Comfort and Elegance
From the moment we arrived, Cà Del Lago embraced us with its warm, inviting atmosphere. The property struck a beautiful balance between catering to families and maintaining an air of sophisticated relaxation that promised rejuvenation for all of us.
A Paradise of Amenities
- Private Spa Retreat: For those seeking ultimate relaxation, the hotel offers a private spa area available for hourly bookings – a perfect escape for parents needing some quiet time.
- Inviting Outdoor Pool: The shared outdoor pool quickly became our favorite spot. As I glided through the perfectly warmed water, I couldn’t help but appreciate its comfortable depth – ideal for both swimming laps and leisurely wading. The surrounding lounge area offered a choice of sun-soaked spots or shaded retreats, perfect for relaxing with a book or simply soaking in the serene atmosphere.
- Nature’s Playground: The grounds were a delightful surprise, dotted with fruit trees and stately olives. Our little one’s eyes lit up at the sight of the colorful swing set and slides, promising hours of outdoor fun.

Turning Lemons into Lemonade: An Unexpected Room Service Adventure
Our plans took an unexpected turn when our daughter developed a fever shortly after arrival. However, what could have been a damper on our trip turned into one of its most memorable moments.
A Room with a View (and Then Some)
Our room, it turned out, had a breathtaking view of Lake Como. As our little one drifted off to sleep early, my husband and I decided to make the most of the situation. We transformed our room into a private dining room:
- Opened the windows wide, letting in the fresh lake breeze
- Moved our small in-room table right up to the window
- Ordered a delightful room service meal
What started as a necessary adjustment became aa lovely dinner for two, with the scenic nighttime view of Lake Como as our backdrop. The staff’s kindness in accommodating our needs only added to the evening.

Exploring Lake Como: A Morning Adventure
As the new day dawned and our daughter’s fever broke, we were eager to explore. The morning air was still cool as we set out on foot towards the lake, a short and pleasant walk from our hotel.
We discovered a charming trail hugging the lakeshore, its path inviting us to wander for hours. But with a recovering baby in tow, we decided to keep our excursion brief, capping it off with a delightful treat – creamy gelato from a quaint lakeside café. The cool, sweet flavors were the perfect reward for our morning explorers.
Beating the Heat: A Day of Aquatic Fun and Learning
As the Italian sun climbed higher, bringing with it waves of heat, we faced a challenge: how to keep cool and entertained without air conditioning. My husband’s suggestion to use water as our ally proved brilliant.
Pool Day Adventures
We spent the hottest hours by the pool, alternating between refreshing dips and lounging in the shade. It became an opportunity for our baby to enjoy the water and continue developing her aquatic skills:
- We brought her favorite temperature-sensing bath duck, which became an exciting swimming target.
- She enthusiastically kicked and splashed, showing off her growing confidence in the water.
- We sang water-themed songs and played gentle games, building her confidence in the pool.
Creating a Cool Oasis
During our shade breaks, we set up a play area on cool, damp towels. I had packed some books and toys, turning our pool day into an impromptu learning session. We read stories I had brought along, taking extra time to point out and discuss the labels and pictures. We also sang her favorite songs, incorporating hand motions and gestures to enhance her language development.

A Taste of Local Flavor: Gravedona ed Uniti
Before we bid farewell to this enchanting region, we took a short trip to nearby Gravedona ed Uniti. This architectural marvel, with its medieval churches and Renaissance palaces, offers stunning Lake Como vistas. But what truly captured our hearts was the local cuisine – in my opinion, the best pizza and gelato in all of Italy.
On our final day, we discovered a local hike that provided breathtaking views of the larger Lake Como and Lake Lugano area. It was a fitting finale to our trip.
Cà Del Lago and its surrounding area didn’t just provide us with a vacation; they gave us a treasure trove of family memories. From overcoming small challenges to indulging in simple pleasures, our time here reminded us that the best family adventures are often unplanned, filled with love, laughter, and a willingness to dive into whatever each day brings.
As we packed our bags, we knew we weren’t just leaving a beautiful location, but a piece of our hearts. Until next time, Lake Como – you’ve shown us the true meaning of ‘la dolce vita’.
