Continuing our Iceland adventure, we explored some of the country’s most famous attractions and discovered why this landscape captivates travelers from around the world.
Selfoss: The Town That Stole Our Afternoon
There’s a town called Selfoss on the main road on the south side of the island. Make it either an intentional stop along the way or a dedicated visit. The large river running through town is beautiful, and there’s a really inviting food hall and courtyard space with lots of good food and coffee shops.
They also have a Skyr tasting room that we ran out of time to visit, but it looked super high quality. It reminded me of the Guinness tour in Ireland – super well designed with tastings. The busy town also had a very friendly pedestrian culture. Cars stopped immediately for people, were friendly, and then went about their day.
On our way north from town, we drove through vibrant green trees and foliage in the summer landscape. We could easily spot Kerio crater right from the main highway – a beautiful sight that would be super easy to visit if you have time.
Strokkur’s Show: Nature’s Most Reliable Performer

Strokkur Geyser is definitely worth visiting. The scenery is beautiful and full of lots of natural geysers. Our daughter really enjoyed seeing all of them. It’s a really pretty part of the country just to see and visit. I hope to talk more about it in a future blog and share more photos and videos from our visit.
Þingvellir: Where Continents Meet and History Was Made

After camping and visiting another volcano in the interior, we found Þingvellir National Park was on our next route. Wow, was I so glad we stopped by! I would highly recommend going there – plan to go out of your way to visit.
This is where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet, creating beautiful natural landscape. It’s also where Iceland became an official country. I plan to talk much more about this incredible place in a future blog post.
